Ohio County Healthcare Organizes Behavioral Health-Based Active Shooter Drill
Hartford, KY – [6/25/25] – In a proactive effort to enhance safety and preparedness, several Ohio County organizations joined forces to conduct a behavioral health-based active shooter drill. This collaborative training was designed to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and the broader community in the event of a critical incident.
The drill was a joint initiative between Ohio County Healthcare, Ohio County Behavioral Health, Ohio County EMS, the Ohio County Sheriff’s Department, Beaver Dam Police Department, and Hartford Police Department. Together, these agencies simulated a real-time emergency scenario focused on behavioral health settings, where unique challenges and sensitivities must be considered.
“This training reflects our shared commitment to safety, preparedness, and compassionate care,” said Travis Howard, RN, Director of Nursing & OCH’s Emergency Preparedness Lead. “By working together, we’re building a safer environment for everyone who walks through our doors.”
The drill emphasized coordinated response strategies, communication protocols, and trauma-informed approaches to managing high-stress situations. It also provided an opportunity for staff and first responders to practice de-escalation techniques and reinforce emergency procedures tailored to behavioral health environments.
Ohio County Healthcare and its partners remain dedicated to continuous improvement and collaboration to ensure the highest standards of safety and care.
