Job Description:
The Acute Care Service Director oversees the areas of Emergency Services and Inpatient Services.

The Acute Care Service Director is responsible for overseeing the operations of Departments/Areas directly supervised. With these departments, the Clinical Director is responsible for the following Personnel Functions: Recruitment and retention of staff, disciplinary systems, assurance of competency, employee development, education and training, evaluation of performance, communications, and within budgetary restraints, organizing the areas of responsibility and placing accountability with subordinates, in a manner that enhances the entire organization, establishment of accountability throughout department; (where others are delegated specific duties and responsibilities, the Clinical Director will make sure that the expectations are clearly articulated and that the person so delegated is held accountable for fulfilling his/her responsibilities.)
Financial Function responsibilities are as follows: financial operations of the departments supervised, charge capture as appropriate, expenses control, assuring that departments supervised operate within parameters of approved budgets, seeing that financial duties are carried out in full compliance with applicable policies, procedures, regulations and laws, and seeing that all supervisors, line leaders and employees are actively involved in making meaningful improvements in their department/services financial position. Furthermore, this responsibility includes assisting the CFO in: development of the Annual Operating Budgets for the above-named areas, identification of capital equipment needs for the areas, and assisting the Business Office with chart audits as requested. Quality/Safety/Risk Management Function responsibilities includes: Improving quality of services rendered to patients, physicians and other customers, personally improving quality of own work, assuring that all areas supervised are actively involved in improving quality delivered (adherence to the PI Plan, indicator monitoring, etc.), assuring that all areas are actively involved in improving patient safety, reporting and addressing any safety/risk management/infection control concern immediately to the Director of Quality; informing the DON of those needing administrative attention, participating in the safety Program as directed, being familiar with responsibilities associated with emergency preparedness plan, equipment management of areas of responsibility.
Compliance responsibilities include: reporting any compliance concern immediately to the hospital's Compliance Officer, seeing that all departmental functions are carried out in full compliance with applicable policies, procedures, regulations and laws, seeing that a departmental compliance plan is in place and functioning; making sure all employees understand compliance expectations, maintaining confidentiality in all patient care matters.
Medical Staff responsibilities include: assuring that all employees show courtesy and respect to providers and that providers are treated as our valued customers, addressing provider concerns in a timely manner, maintaining positive communications with providers and their clinic staff, acting as a liaison with the providers, promoting a just culture and safe environment for all employees, and fostering a team mentality between providers and staff.
The Acute Care Service Director is responsible for departmental planning in Service Development which includes Planning and setting objectives consistent with the Organization's overall strategic management plan, and implementing action to accomplish those plans, market existing services provided to meet the needs of key customers and to generate new services, identifying new business/service opportunities, with the scope of the services supervised, to meet patient (and community) needs. In this regard, the Clinical Director follows the defined process established by the CFO and works with the CFO, DON, and CNCO in making sure pro forma financial impact statements for the proposed services are developed. Recommendations are made directly to DON.
The Acute Care Service Director is responsible for the other following functions: product selection after obtaining input from others as required, assuring that payroll information is submitted on a timely basis, communication pertinent information to staff, policy an procedure development as needed and annual review of P&P's, coordination of the Utilization Review Committee, disseminating necessary information regarding regulatory or process change in areas of responsibility , outcome analysis, protocols/guidelines and reimbursement, and conducting/attending interdisciplinary meetings to ensure appropriate utilization of resources. The Clinical Director is a participating member of the following Board/Medical Staff/Hospital Committees: Utilization Review, Patient Care Council, Directors, Leadership, and serves on appropriate Environment of Care Action Teams. In these functions, the Clinical Director should be an active participant and should work with the responsible Administrative Officer to ensure that the committee is successful.
